Finally, A Soquel Dance PDF Print E-mail
Written by Allison Stevens

What? A dance? On May 1st!? Yes, it is true. After over a year without dances on cam pus, Soquel High School is FINALLY going to have an all-grade dance. The theme for this awesome dance is ROCKSTAR!

Come dressed as your very own rockstar, or come with your friends as the ultimate band. The event is going to be held in the Multi Purpose Room from 7 to 10 p.m., and is sure to be a great success that no one should miss out on. And for only $5 for those without an ASB sticker and $4 with an ASB sticker, it is a reasonable price for everyone.

The Rockstar Dance is going to be an opportunity for the administration to see if the students of Soquel High are ready for continual school dances next year. After many problems with ecstasy and alcohol usage, the administration are allowing the students one last shot to prove their sobriety while attending on-campus events.

Although this dance will not have an effect on this year’s Prom, certain students may be denied a bid if they do not follow school rules. If all goes well with the upcoming dance, Soquel will be having many more dances next year.

After multiple obstacles faced by the administration, the student body is very excited about having an at-school dance. This is going to be the first dance since the September of 2007 Graffiti Dance. Come support your school and dance the night away!

Testing : How to Relax and Test Well PDF Print E-mail

Many students feel that STAR tests do not matter, and they either bubble in random patterns or guess on all of the questions. Many students think the STAR tests do not personally affect them. In reality though, STAR test scores DO affect students. While it is true that STAR test scores don’t change your grade, it’s also important to know that the amount of funding Soquel High receives heavily depends on the scores.

As you may know, Soquel High has been undergoing major budget cuts. The school simply can’t afford any more losses due to students treating the STAR tests as a joke. If our school’s scores are too low, we face even more cuts that will affect students directly— such as huge class sizes. Not taking the STAR tests seriously does harm you and all students.

Another issue surrounding these tests is that many students may be under a lot of pressure. If you are feeling anxious about STAR testing, here are some tips to help you feel calmer and less stressed.

Glamorous Hollywood PDF Print E-mail

This year’s Formal, “A Knight in Hollywood”, had a fairly small attendance record, with just over 300 attendees. The Juniors on the Formal committee were worried about the new system of selling and distributing bids (as the method of doing so has changed twice since last year’s Formal).

Although the bids were distributed through the Finance Office after a final approval from the administrative office only the day before Formal, everyone got their ticket in.

At the dance, the overall energy was positive and all the students behaved exceptionally well. Nobody was removed from the dance, and none of the chaperones were completely horrified by today’s dancing.

The decorations looked awesome: a huge “HOLLYWOOD” sign over the stage dazzled the crowd, and a red carpet in the entrance made everyone feel like a celebrity. Throughout the Ballroom, there were interesting cardboard character silluettes, movie posters, and film strips.
The excitement was truly palpable for miles away at Soquel High’s “Knight in Hollywood”. Thank you to all who attended, you helped to make the night one to remember.

Draconian Budget Cuts for Schools PDF Print E-mail

A façade of happiness is apparent in all educational administrative teams. The state budget is, in reality, a behemoth terror threatening staff and students.

There is no money available to schools. Quite literally, schools are out of funds to supply necessities such as copy paper, toilet paper, custodians, substitutes, administrative time, and much more. Schools are being forced to cut hundreds of thousands dollars to help offset the budget deficit the school system is currently facing.

The high schools in the Santa Cruz City Schools District specifically need to cut half a million dollars next school year, in the best scenario. Even now the money available to schools is either dwindling or frozen.

Theoretical budgets and budget reductions are being discussed, laughed at, and condemned. For a while, the state was waiting on one vote, but on February 19, a plan was approved.

Third Annual Mr. SHS! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lauren Seynhaeve

Walking down the red carpet in formal and swim attire; showing off a talent; performing in a choreographed group dance; answering a series of questions - all the glamour of 2009’s Mr. Soquel High School competition is nearly here! Mr. SHS, the highly anticipated beauty pageant parody for Senior guys, will be held on Thursday, March 12.

Each of the Mr. SHS contenders are sponsored by a different department, club, or other activity at Soquel High. Representing their group, the Seniors will put on a show to win the highly valued title of Mr. Soquel High School, a truly coveted title.

Started in 2007 by Drama teacher Mrs. Kline, the Mr. SHS pageant has brought laughter to all in each of the previous years. Judged on ability, attire, and general performance, Mr. SHS contestants compete in front of a panel of Soquel High staff, in addition to the live audience of peers.
The talent portion of the show should have something to do with the sponsoring group (i.e. a Performing Arts representative singing a song), although this rule isn’t enforced.

When all of the individuals have finished their various performances, the judges will tally the final scores and announce 2009’s Mr. SHS.
This year’s first prize is a double bid to Prom, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The first runner-up will receive a free yearbook, and the second runner-up will be given a $10 giftcard to the Blue & Gold Café.

Tickets to Mr. SHS are $5. All revenue made from Mr. SHS goes to support the Drama Department and the general ASB fund.
The third annual Mr. Soquel High School, Mr. SHS 2009, will be held on Thursday, March 12. Come to have a good time, to support your friends, or to help out the Drama Department and ASB, but don’t forget to come! Doors open at 5:15, and the show goes from 5:30 to 7:30.
