SOQUEL HIGH FUND NEWS: The Soquel High Fund had it first meeting on Sept. 1. More than 30 people attended. It was wonderful to see so many new faces and all the feedback and ideas were a welcome outcome. I wanted to share a recap of the meeting for those who were unable to attend.-- Lisa Anderson, president Due to the budget cuts for the past few years, fundraising was one of the major agenda items. The SHF wants the Soquel community to know that we understand that many families are struggling in these difficult financial times. We are not expecting everyone to be able to contribute to the school financially. What we do hope is that this financial crisis will bring us together as a community to address many of the issues we face. We are asking for a small amount of your time to join us in making the Soquel High Community the best it can be for our children and ourselves. With that said, the fundraiser agenda items located at the end of this meeting update is for information purposes, so everyone will have the opportunity to get involved if they so choose. Athletic Director, Stu Walters, presented an update on the status of the athletic programs. He informed the group that each sport was on its own to raise the necessary funds to sustain the program. The current donate to play amount per sport is $135. However, no player will be denied participation for lack of payment. He is looking for a few volunteers to support him as the athletic director. The SHF suggested that parents be alerted to contact their athletes' coaches to see how they can help. The success of a particular sport may require parents to get involved for the program to stay viable. Principal Ken Lawrence-Emanuel gave his monthly principal's report.
It was suggested that the SHF create a mentoring program in which three to five parents from each grade level would help parents by mentoring lower grade parents. If any one is interested in participating in this program to build community at Soquel high please contact Lisa Andersen at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The SHF is working with school administration to update the Soquel High website. The Fund approved $1500 to upgrade the Joomla software version as a first step to website restructuring. A committee will be formed to discuss the changes that are needed on the website. If you would like to a committee member or offer suggestions to the group, please contact Lisa Andersen at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The board nominated and elected new members to the board.
Last spring, the SHF voted to hire an alumni coordinator position to help build up an alumni database and improve alumni involvement in the school. Caren Spencer, SHF board member, is working on filling this position. Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 23. ASB rep Jillian Zeman informed the board the leadership class is starting to plan homecoming festivities. Leadership is also deciding whether there will be a homecoming court elected this year. SHF suggested they talk to the senior class and get a consensus on whether they wanted a homecoming court. The ASB would also like to have more floats in the homecoming parade and are asking for more club, team and class involvement. The leadership class has an open door policy to any student who would like to help. Soquel High Fund wants to support the event and encourages any parents who would like to get involved in Homecoming planning and coordination to call Juli McDermott at 831-239-7322. The fundraiser agenda items were as follows:
